The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Fundación Pablo Palazuelo and curated by Alfonso de la Torre, includes twelve sculptures, nineteen paintings, and a filmed interview with Pierre Dumayet from the 1970s.
Pablo Palazuelo is a multidisciplinary artist considered an international reference in 20th-century Spanish abstract art, whose works are exhibited in institutions such as the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Centre Pompidou, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
CVNE has maintained a clear commitment to art since it hosted the landmark exhibition of Eduardo Chillida in 2014. This show, always held at the historic CVNE winery in Haro, was followed by exhibitions featuring works by Cristina Iglesias and Anthony Caro.
Haro, November 30, 2021. The CVNE winery will host, between March and December 2022, an exhibition dedicated to the works of Pablo Palazuelo (1915–2007), a Madrid-born multidisciplinary artist regarded as a major master of 20th-century geometric abstraction. With the exhibition “Ensoñación de la materia” (“Dreaming of Matter”), the artist’s monumental sculptures are shown for the first time together with his paintings, in an exhibition that will occupy both the interior and exterior spaces of this century-old winery located in the heart of Haro, in the Barrio de la Estación.
The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Fundación Pablo Palazuelo, which safeguards the artist’s legacy, and curated by Alfonso de la Torre. It includes a total of twelve large-scale sculptures in corten steel, installed in the winery’s outdoor spaces, and twenty large-format oil paintings created from the 1970s until the artist’s death in 2007. In addition, the exhibition features a filmed interview between Pablo Palazuelo and Pierre Dumayet from the 1970s, which has remained relatively little known until now.
Through these works, the title “Ensoñación de la materia” (“Dreaming of Matter”) is inspired by a statement by Pablo Palazuelo himself:
“Every act of true creation implies a transgression. Dreaming of matter, metals come from the depths of the mine, concentrating veins and millenary distillations; they are tempered at red heat and tend toward gold. The alchemists searched within the earth, and stripped of gangue, brought their secrets into the light. Something very similar is what I try to do with metals: remove their gangue, discover their suggestion, their pulse, collaborate with them to exalt their brilliance and color. In metal lies the ultimate fascination of matter, and within it beats a sublimated concentration of color.”
Distributed across the exhibition hall and the exterior spaces of the CVNE winery, “Ensoñación de la materia” proposes an interplay and dialogue between the painted images in the canvases and the impressive sculptures, often suggested through the lines and planes emerging from the paintings.

About CVNE
Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE) was founded in 1879 in the town of Haro, La Rioja, in the region known as Rioja Alta within the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja (D.O.Ca. Rioja). Today, five generations later, it remains in the hands of the founders’ descendants.
CVNE currently operates seven wineries in Spain, across different Denominaciones de Origen: CVNE, Viña Real, and Contino in D.O.Ca. Rioja; Virgen del Galir in Valdeorras; Bela in Ribera del Duero; and Roger Goulart in D.O. Cava.
The company is a leader in its sector in Spain and a recipient of the most prestigious awards in the wine world, including those granted by Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate. In this context, Imperial, CVNE’s flagship wine, received the highest distinction from Wine Spectator as “Wine of the Year” in 2014. Imperial Gran Reserva 2004 thus became the first Spanish wine to achieve this recognition from the magazine, which annually selects the most influential wines worldwide.
In the same year, CVNE climbed 15 positions to reach the Top #8 of the World’s Most Admired Wine Brands 2021 by Drinks International. The publication highlights a history shaped by both tradition and innovation, which at CVNE go hand in hand, and notes several values that make CVNE a unique winery and an iconic ambassador of Spain worldwide.
The company continuously combines the wisdom of winemaking traditions with the introduction of the latest innovations, ensuring that its wines are recognized—yesterday, today, and tomorrow—as high-quality products.
