The Fundación Pablo Palazuelo collaborates with the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Fundación AXA in the innovative exhibition “Reversos”, featuring a work by the artist: Sin Título II, aiming to reveal the hidden side of artworks.
The exhibition, curated by the artist Miguel Ángel Blanco, transforms rooms A and B of the Jerónimos building by painting them black for the first time, offering an open-ended journey that allows for a spatial relationship without hierarchies or chronological order.
The exhibition, open until March 3, 2024, presents works from the Prado collection alongside generous loans from national and international institutions. Among them are pieces such as “Assemblage i graffiti, 1972” by Antoni Tàpies, “Cosme I de Médici” by di Cosimo, “Self-Portrait as a Painter” by Van Gogh, “Artist in His Studio” by Rembrandt, and “The Empty Mask” by Magritte, totaling nearly one hundred exhibited works.
The exhibition proposes a unique approach to painting, inspired by “Las Meninas” by Velázquez, where the reverse of the canvas occupies a significant part of its surface. Miguel Ángel Blanco invites visitors to turn the works around in order to establish a new and complete connection with the artists behind the 98 selected works.
“Reversos” structures the exhibition into chapters that explore various aspects related to the backs of artworks. From depictions of painters’ studios to works that reveal the artistic identity of the reverse side, including trompe-l’œil, stretcher crossings, and revealing details of creative processes.
This pioneering exhibition goes beyond individual studies or small displays, offering a comprehensive exploration of the reverse side of the Prado’s collections and highlighting how the appreciation of artworks is enriched by considering not only their front but also their back.
“Reversos“ features works by contemporary artists such as Vik Muniz, Sophie Calle, and Miguel Ángel Blanco himself, as well as presenting for the first time at the Prado masters such as Van Gogh, René Magritte, Lucio Fontana, and others, expanding the experience of art beyond conventions.
