The notebooks of Pablo Palazuelo: the invisible origin of his geometric art.
The Spanish artist is one of the great references of geometric abstract art in Europe.
But his creative process went far beyond painting or sculpture: it began in his workbooks, where drawing was a tool for research and transformation.
Far from being simple sketches, these papers were true visual laboratories. In them, each line represented the beginning of an intellectual and spiritual quest. Palazuelo worked with translucent sketch paper, a technique that allowed him to superimpose forms and develop complex compositions, a method that recalled his initial training as an architect.
“The line as a dream of architecture”: the exhibition at the ICO Museum
The exhibition “Pablo Palazuelo. La línea como sueño de arquitectura“, held in 2023 at the ICO Museum, allowed the public to delve into this fascinating creative process. It showed how Palazuelo used geometry as a poetic language, where art and architectural thought merged.
The influence of alchemy on Palazuelo’s art
One of the most interesting aspects of Palazuelo’s work is its relationship with alchemy. For the artist, alchemy was not only an ancient practice related to chemistry, but a philosophy that speaks of transformation and transmutation, of both matter and spirit.
Concepts such as “nigredo”, which represents darkness and dissolution, and “solve et coagula”, the process of dissolving and re-uniting, are key to understanding his creations. In his series ‘Nigredo’, these ideas come to life through abstract forms that emerge from the darkness, revealing a constant search for the hidden essence of things.
Pablo Palazuelo: beyond geometric art
Palazuelo’s work transcends the labels of geometric or abstract art. His creations are the result of a process of profound knowledge, where drawing is a philosophical and spiritual tool. Through his notebooks, paintings and sculptures, he invites us to explore the invisible, what lies beyond form.
