“Art and Spirituality” arrives at the Niemeyer Center

The iconic venue of contemporary architecture, the Niemeyer Center, hosts from October 10, 2025 the exhibition titled Art and Spirituality. Imagining the Extraordinary, jointly organized with the BBVA Collection and curated by Alfonso de la Torre.

During this period, until March 1, 2026, visitors will be able to explore four curatorial chapters bringing together more than forty works from both ancient art and 20th- and 21st-century artistic movements. The selection embraces a variety of formats and techniques: painting, sculpture, photography, installations, and video art.

The journey begins with “The Origin / The Center”, where works by Pablo Palazuelo and Jorge Oteiza connect with the idea of the primal image, the “hidden center,” and the circular or spiral symbol.

The second section, titled “Gardens and Deserts” / “The Garden of Delights versus the Desert and Spaces”, explores the contrast between the paradisiacal and the barren, featuring works by Ouka Leele, Marta Cárdenas, and Eva Lootz.

The third section, “Between Pain and Ecstasy / Miracle and Healing”, addresses the mystical dimension of contemporary art through works by Bill Viola, Antonio López, and Mar Solís.

Finally, the section “Vanitas” brings together reflections on finitude, memory, and transience through works by Joaquín Sorolla, Marina Abramović, Miquel Barceló, and Jaume Plensa.

General admission costs €4, with a reduced ticket price of €3. The last hour of each afternoon is free upon collection of a ticket at the box office.

Ultimately, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience how art—both historical and contemporary—can engage in dialogue with spirituality, symbolism, and both the intimate and the collective at the same time. A visual journey that invites visitors to go beyond the visible in order to imagine the extraordinary.
